Why Is Honesty So Important ?

The most basic reason I can think of for being honest - and thus the most important reason to be honest - is that honesty is far easier to substantiate than a lie.  Telling the truth may cause one difficulty on occasion, but it is far easier to maintain the truth.  Lies - since they try to portray things as they are not - are far more difficult to substantiate; in fact, a lie cannot be proved, whereas the truth is not only provable, but one can gain confirmation by others.

It is extremely important when you are dealing with your own self. Decide to live a life true to yourself otherwise you cannot stay true to anybody.
Moreover, as well as being simply easier to maintain, honesty reflects well on a person.  If a person consistently tells the truth, people can trust that person.  The person is worthy of respect.  One develops a reputation for telling the truth, which becomes a rock-solid foundation for building productive relationships.
The only way to go undeceived in the world is to be honest about what you see and feel, especially to yourself. Being honest with others aids them in their own perception. Personally I feel that, given all the layers of falsehood that exist, honesty is simply the least work.
