Importance of being Self- Reliant /Sufficient

We all hear this term around, but what does it really mean? Is there one definition that fits according to everyone?Well, if you ask me, no. There is not just one definition of self-sufficiency that fits right..But what could self-sufficiency mean for you. Right where you are? It could mean a lot of different things. Which is what I’m wanting to explore and explain.
Well this might  sound overly simplified . . . but think about it a while. I think you’ll see that true “independence” is not an easy state to achieve, which is why many people don’t even try to reach this state: A truly “independent person” is the one who - on the most basic level - DOES NOT NEED THE ASSISTANCE OR ADVICE OF OTHERS TO THINK AND/OR ACT IN THEIR BEST INTEREST.

Read that last sentence very carefully and take it at it's face value. Keep in mind that “best interest” is a pretty fluid concept, and is different for everyone, and the ability to truly think and act in someone’s own best interest is pretty much the definition of a mentally “healthy” person. Now think about all the people you know who DO NOT act/think/behave in their own best interest.

This does NOT mean that an independent person never asks for or needs advice. It does NOT mean that an independent person never asks for or needs assistance with anything. It does NOT mean that an independent person can do - without any assistance - EVERYTHING required of a normal, functioning person with responsibilities. It simply means that a person has reached a state where they KNOW and are able to ACCESS WHAT they need WHEN they need it, WHERE it is available, and HOW to use it for their own self-preservation.

Self-sufficiency can be described as two ways. First, self-sufficiency is being able to supply one’s own needs without external assistance. Or, it could also mean, having extreme confidence in one’s own resources.

So as you can tell, this could look differently for everyone. It could be someone who lives on a large homestead and grows all of their own food.self-sufficiency is a broad lifestyle that can look very different and be common ground for a wide variety of people.

Being self-sufficient goes hand in hand with being frugal. So if you want to be self-sufficient start by living within your means. Look for every way possible to save money.

Living simply is probably one of the most important keys to becoming self-sufficient. The reason is because if you are living simply, then you aren’t going to waste your money on buying all of the latest gadgets. You won’t be eating out all of the time, nor will you be spending big bucks on tons of clothing.

Simplicity will save you a lot of money in the long run. So embrace a simple lifestyle. The less you need, the less you spend.
If you can begin to save money and live simply, then you can beat that mindset. But what happens if your source of income is suddenly yanked away from you? Well, that is another area of self-sufficiency that you should consider. Think of ways you can begin to form your own businesses. It could be selling eggs, selling livestock, becoming a consultant, being a freelance writer. The ideas are pretty well limitless.
